KUCHING: The Sarawak state government`s move to increase timber premium from RM0.80 to RM50 per cubic metre is a wise decision and the revenue collected will go back to conduct timber research and help fund Sarawak students pursuing higher education, said Sarawak Foundation board member Datuk Peter Minos.
Minos said it was high time for the rate hike because those who have made millions out of the timber industry since the 60s must start to contribute to Sarawak and its people.
"We all support the Sarawak`s government decision on this matter as it is for the public good. Why must a few big timber towkays and associates be allowed to have it almost all and raking in millions if not billions and the rest in Sarawak just enjoying the crumbs from Sarawak`s natural resources?" said Minos.
He opined that profits and benefits from the exploitation of the State natural resources especially of timber, land, minerals and such should be enjoyed by as many people as possible.
"This is fully supported by all Sarawakians as being a fine corporate culture besides being commercially conscionable," he added. Bernama
