KUCHING: Pre-tournament favourites SMK Penrissen No.1 lived-up to their top billing by successfully defending their MSSM Girls U-15 Kuching Inter-school Softball Competition title yesterday.
The school seems to be light-years ahead of the competition as they won the tournament with ease.
Host SMK St Theresa had to be contented as bridesmaid this year despite showing promises early in the tournament.
In the U-18 category, highly fancied SMK Green Road and SMK Penrissen No.1 booked their tickets to the next round of the U-18 competition.
SMK Green Road blanked SMK DPHA Gapor 38-0 while SMK Penrissen No.1 thrashed the same school 22-2.
In the SMK Green Road versus SMK Penrissen No.1 encounter, SMK Green Road prevailed 20-3.
“I am very happy that my girls did not let me down today. I know we can do it and like I said before the start of the tournament, I hope our girls team can emulate the success of our boys team,” said SMK Green Road coach Juraimie Junaidi.
Meanwhile in group B, host St Theresa also qualified to the next round after beating last year’s runners-up SMK Lake 24-12.
SMK Pending, the surprise package of the tournament, also qualified for the next round after a registering wins against SMK Batu Kawa and tournament host SMK St Theresa. SMK Pending will play group A runners-up SMK Penrissen No.1 while the host school will meet SMK Green Road.
“I can expect a tough yet competitive encounter with SMK St Theresa but as we have beaten last year’s champion (SMK Penrissen No.1), we have the edge. Nevertheless, we will play our next match with caution and confidence,” added Juraimie.
The second round of the competition cum semi-finals and final games will be played at the SMK St Thomas school field today.
