SPM, STPM top achievers receive rewards from Yayasan Sarawak

KUCHING, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- A total of 1,432 students with outstanding achievements in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and the Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) today received cash rewards from Yayasan Sarawak. Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg who is also Yayasan Sarawak chairman presented the awards to the students in a ceremony which took place at the Swinburne University`s Sarawak campus multi-purpose hall here.
Out of the 1, 432 recipients, 1,135 were students who sat for SPM last year who received RM500 each, while the rest were STPM leavers who received RM700.
"Although the number of outstanding students is increasing every year, Yayasan Sarawak remains committed to handing out the rewards in recognition of the efforts and success of the students," said the foundation`s director Azmi Bujang.
The Chief Minister in his speech at the ceremony said the state government through Yayasan Sarawak would continue to play its role to produce more educated and skilled Sarawakians to develop the state.
He said since its formation, Yayasan Sarawak had helped produce many intellectuals who went on to be successful in their respective fields of work.
According to him, Yayasan Sarawak was also ready to assist Sarawak students who required financial assistance in pursuing their degree or masters programme locally or abroad.
Meanwhile, Azmi said Yayasan Sarawak even offered loan discounts to students who obtained `first class honours` whereby the borrower only had to pay 25 per cent of the loan amount.
